Braxton Hicks Contractions

Braxton Hicks are sporadic uterine contractions that some women experience during their second and third trimesters of pregnancy. First described by Dr. John Braxton Hicks in 1872, these contractions are often referred to as "false" or "practice labor contractions" because they help prepare your body for the real birth, but Braxton Hicks contractions and true labor contractions differ in a variety of ways.

Gestational Diabetes

According to the American Diabetes Association gestational diabetes, a condition that affects both pre-existing diabetics and women with no history of diabetes, is the most common pregnancy complication and affects about 4% of women. If this happens to you, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel-most women who contract gestational diabetes do not remain diabetics once their baby is born.

Second Month of Pregnancy

Slowly but surely, your baby has grown to measure one inch in length and graduates from a fertilized egg to an embryo. You may discover the unglamorous side of pregnancy this month : nausea, morning sickness, and fatigue will begin to take hold.

Water Births

Water birth is the act of delivering your baby into a tub of warm water rather than a having a traditional bed delivery. The temperature of the water ranges between 90 to 101 degrees Fahrenheit and is thought to help mothers relax while giving birth. Advocates also claim that water births ease babies into their new environment because the warm water is reminiscent of the womb.

Benefits of Prenatal Exercise

Prenatal exercise provides a myriad of health benefits ranging from a positive self-image to improved circulation. As pregnancy takes your body through physiological changes, you and your healthcare provider should work together to carefully design a routine that will not strain you or your baby.

PUPPP - Pregnancy Rash

As if morning sickness and contractions weren't enough, one percent of pregnant women will also develop a skin rash called pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP). If you're affected, you might notice itchy red bumps near stretch marks on the abdomen.

Nesting Instinct

Nesting is the strong urge to clean and prepare your home, or nest, for your new baby's arrival. You may begin feeling these impulses as early as your fifth month of pregnancy; however, many women report feeling these instincts more accurately as their due date approaches, suggesting nesting instincts may indicate impending labor.

Implantation Bleeding

Implantation bleeding , vaginal bleeding, or spotting, is a pregnancy symptom which tends to occur anywhere from 6-12 days after conception. This type of bleeding is caused by the fertilized egg embedding itself into the endometrial lining of your uterus. Not all women experience this symptom, but it is important to note nonetheless.
