The Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)

Stand with feet about 3 to 4 feet apart. Turn your left foot so it points to the left 90 degrees and angle your right foot in slightly to the left. Turn your left thigh outward so the center of your left knee cap is in line with the center of your left ankle.

Stretch your arms straight out to the sides at shoulder level.


As you exhale, bend at the waist to the left and slightly forward to slide your hand down your left leg to lowest point you can reach. Make sure your knees are straight and your hips are facing forward. It helps to imagine that your back, legs and buttocks are against a wall to keep them flat.

You should feel a stretch in the groin area and the side of your back. Only reach as far as you can without feeling uncomfortable. Do not strain and be sure to maintain balance at all times. Do this next to a couch or wall if you feel unsteady in any way.

Once you have reached a comfortable stretch, look up at your right hand. Take a few breaths in this position and focus on the muscles being stretched. Carefully stand up.

Repeat this pose to the right.


This pose stretches the spine and tones the spinal nerves, leaving the body feeling lighter and more relaxed. It also promotes proper digestion.

Triangle as a symbol

In Hindu art and older mythologies the triangle is a symbol for the divine principle. It is often found in mantras, mandalas and used in meditation.

A downward pointing triangle represents Shakti, the dynamic female principle, while an upward pointing triangle stands for Siva, the passive male force.
